Robotic Bariatric Surgery
As part of Dr. Lublin’s continuing dedication to advancement in the field of bariatrics, we are now offering robotic gastric sleeve procedures. The da Vinci Surgical System has proven to be an impressive assistant in the surgical field with over 1.5 million procedures performed worldwide. Those benefits are now available to qualifying bariatric patients as well. During a robotic bariatric surgery, Dr. Lublin has complete control over the robot and every hand input is translated into movement of the robot itself. In fact, the robot scales the surgeon’s hand movements for greater precision and control.
With precise movements and complete surgeon control, the da Vinci robot can take laparoscopy to the next level, especially in complex cases.
The da Vinci Surgical System gives bariatric surgeons another option in the fight against obesity. First, the high definition cameras deployed during surgery can offer a field of vision that is far superior to previous generations of laparoscopes. The field of vision is both magnified and 3 dimensional. Further, the robot has “wristed” arms, again controlled by the surgeon, that have an even greater range of motion than a human’s. These wrists allow movements that simply aren’t possible with traditional laparoscopic tools.
Benefits of Robotic Bariatric Surgery
For patients and surgeons alike, the da Vinci Surgical System has several advantages. With precise movements and complete surgeon control, the da Vinci robot can take laparoscopy to the next level, especially in complex cases. The flexibility of the robots allows the surgeon to perform with even greater precision than that of unassisted laparoscopy, while a 3D surgical field of vision offers an unparalleled view of the abdomen. The result is often reduced pain and blood loss as well as a shortened hospital stay.
Risks and Considerations
As with any surgical procedure there are inherent risks. These should be discussed with Dr. Lublin prior to the procedure. There are also risks specific to the gastric sleeve which can be viewed on our gastric sleeve page.
Not all patients will qualify for a robotic gastric sleeve. As such we encourage you to contact our office to learn more about this and our unassisted surgical procedures for obesity. Robotically assisted bariatric surgery is not yet available for the gastric band.
