Moderation after Bariatric Surgery

When it comes to healthy eating, moderation is the key! Healthy eating is not about strict diets and depriving yourself of the foods you love. Rather, the ultimate goal should be to feel great about yourself, build self-confidence, increase your energy levels, and consume foods that your body needs.

Eating smart is not always about what you eat, but about how you eat it too. Your diet should consist of a healthy balance of fiber, fat, carbohydrates, protein, vitamins, and minerals.  With moderation comes self-control. Self-control helps you to:  1) train your body as to what food should be consumed; and, 2) train your mind and the “food thoughts” that run through it.

The first and most important factor to keep in mind is to know when enough is enough. Use your body as a guide. If you treat it properly, it will let you know when you need to eat. You should always plan your meal ahead of time to ensure you are eating the proper foods in moderation. For starters, try dividing your plate in threes. Two of the thirds should be a protein source and one third should be a carbohydrate source. Remember to eat your protein source first.

If you dedicate yourself to keeping your portion sizes reasonable, it’s easier to eat the foods you want and stay healthier longer.
