How you, as a bariatric surgery patient, prepare before surgery is a very important part of your long-term weight loss success. How you prepare is critical to the effectiveness of the procedure well into the future. As a result, we encourage you to begin the weight loss journey as soon as you decide to undergo bariatric surgery. That means that the lifestyle changes you will have to implement after surgery, should be started beforehand.
It goes without saying that your general health will have an impact on the risks of surgery, both during surgery and throughout your recovery. Since most obese patients have health issues, it is important that they minimize these before the procedure takes place. This starts with quitting smoking as soon as possible, but no later than six weeks before surgery. Smoking constricts the blood vessels. In turn, the amount of blood and oxygen circulating throughout the body is diminished. The result is a greater chance of infection and complications after surgery. It is also important to note that starting the bariatric diet before the procedure can allow you to lose some weight and may help improve high cholesterol and high blood pressure – two key risk factors in cardiovascular health. Finally, understanding what’s expected of you after surgery will give you a head start toward a lifetime of healthy dieting and regular exercise, bringing you that much closer to your goals.
